Kitchen Garden May 2014

The newly restored Kitchen Garden at Hampton Court Palace recreates a taste of the gardens that would have fed the Royal Household through the reign of the Georges. Members will have the chance to see the garden before it opens to the public. We will be holding introductory tours, booking is required – spaces were limited and are now fully booked. Please call the membership office on 020 3166 6327 to be added to the waiting list.

Those of you who came to our Kitchen Garden lunchtime lecture special in January will know just how busy our kitchen gardeners have been since November, digging through the wet winter!

April and May has seen the team busy in sowing vegetables, planting herbs and planting up the garden with the perennials and annuals that will give the garden great colour and vibrancy throughout the summer. The planting of the Quince tree in the middle was a significant milestone for the project and we now see the end in sight!

To give you an idea of the scale of the garden, here is the Kitchen Garden in numbers…

1 mile of paths
94 different vegetable and herb crops – 244 varieties
137 fruit trees
1152 garlic plants
1536 broad bean plants
3220 lettuces
12000 rocket seeds….
